JANUARY 2025

The small/private press movement in the United States has been the subject of many books and articles, but coverage has historically been concentrated on those presses located on either coast or the mid-continent. The Rocky Mountain states have generally been neglected in the past.
This work seeks to begin to correct that oversight. It covers four presses once located in Montana and Wyoming:  Black Stone, Calliopea, Kutenai and Dooryard. Each press biography reviews the background of its proprietors and how the press came to be. The life experiences and philosophies of the proprietors are part of what make each press unique, but all have one thing in common: a desire to produce excellent letterpress editions of texts of value, be they fiction, essays or verse.

Checklists of the publications issued under a press’ own imprint are included along with a few examples of commissioned works. Full color images of title pages or covers of selected titles are also featured.
It is hoped that this contribution to the published history of the small/private press movement in the USA will aid collectors, scholars and other interested individuals in the pursuit of their various aims.

In the midst of the Dawn Sea lies the mighty island nation of Kalyria. It has stood as a beacon of light and hope to the world since its founding at the end of the Dim Times nearly four thousand summers ago, but now in the Summer of the World 6087, something evil is coming. It threatens not only Kalyria herself, but the future of all who call her home, be they stranger or island born. One such stranger is the young Giant, Menannon, exiled from his own land of Lornennog for the crime of laughter, who came with his father to the island when he was but five summers old. Here he found a home, a love and a future of bright promise as the first Giant to ever join the Harper’s Guild. Now, as evil enfolds Kalyria threatening not only his beloved father and she who has his heart in her keeping—Nirna, Kalyria’s Princess Royal—but the very land itself, Menannon finds himself caught in a tangled web of lies and stratagems, sorcery and madness, desperate tactics and disastrous results. A bitter choice looms in evil’s darkness: Who will live and who will die and who will choose between them?

A light romance , Hearts Versus Diamonds was written in 1876 and serialized in Potter's American Monthly in 1878, it was not published in book form until 1899 when it was released by F. T. Neely of New York.

We chose to reprint this romance novel in the Regency vein for several reasons. Firstly, it is of historical interest as the authoress was mother-in-law to Charles Edward Conrad, the founder of Kalispell, Montana, and the book was the only one she wrote, and secondly, the serial publication is difficult to find and of the later book publication, only three copies are known to exist at present (one in the Library of Congress).

The book was written during a time when the authoress was left in dire straits upon the death of her husband and was an attempt to earn money to help support her and her three children. The novel is a typical romance of the period, very similar to a Regency romance, and is pleasant reading.

The extensive introduction by Richard L Hardesty includes a short biographical sketch of the authoress as well as the complete publishing history of the story, including bibliographic details.
